What are license plates and registration? A license plate is a metal or plastic plate attached to a motor vehicle or trailer for official identification purposes. The letters and numbers form a unique alphanumeric code that is registered to you and identifies your vehicle(s). 
Why do I need it? If you want to operate a motor vehicle in Alberta, in addition to a valid Alberta driver's license, you also need to register your vehicle and have valid Alberta license plates.

What do I need to get it?
- Proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale or lease
agreement
- Proof of valid Alberta insurance, (this isn't required when registerin
g a trailer)
- Proof of identity
- If you have purchased a new vehicle, we'll need the original "new vehicle information statement" (NVIS) which the dealer must provide
